Between June and September of 1944, a program of shuttle bombing between bases in Ukraine England and Italy was carried out. Aircraft (B-24's and B-17's) were re-armed and refuelled at bases in Ukraine. They would then attack targets on their way to Italy or England. The process would be repeated on the return trip to Ukraine.
A combination of Soviet paranoia, rapidly advancing Eastern fronts and a devastating Luftwaffe night attack on the U.S. aircraft at Poltava ended the program prematurely.
