The tiny island of Cezembre probably wins this dubious honour, beating out Malta and Kirknes. The island was fortified by the Germans in order to control sea access to St. Malo. In September,1944, numerous attempts were made to bring about the island's surrender. After heavy bombing, land based artillery and ship based gunnery, the target was bombed by 165 Halifax bombers delivering 800 tons of ordnance on August 31, 1944. It was surrendered on September 2. (Cezembre was probably the first target to experience Napalm in the E.T.O.) Today the island is heavily cratered, there are few photos of it probably because large areas are restricted due to the presence of live explosives. The best view is from 2006, here the bunkers and gun emplacements show well. A shakey view of the final bombardment. (People were shooting at the cinematographer!) Cezembra appears at 6:22. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9zembreAn interesting if somewhat lurid account of the German garrison. yorgoskourtakis.wordpress.com/2016/07/24/cezembre-ostwall-ra277-a-forgotten-history/Cezembre-the most heavily bombed location i....kmz (1.34 KB)
