San Ramon Valley, near Mount Diablo (seen at upper left), Coast Range east of San Francisco Bay, California.
Check the boxes for Roads and Borders.
1880's: Naturalist John Muir's close personal friend John Swett, first Superintendent of California Schools, owned a portion of Alhambra Valley (picture center), and Muir inherated an estate in Martinez (bottom left). Both had expansive fruit tree orchards. On warm sunny days the two men were known to have walked from their homes and met half way along Alhambra Valley Road for long afternoon talks on nature, conservation, agriculture, and politics..
Today, the former rural setting is paved over with roads and housing, developments sprawl over the hills and valleys, spoiling the pristine evergreen woodlands and open grasslands. Although much of the hills are protected as regional parks, including the large Briones Regional Park. Check the More Box for Parks. In memorium, in this region there are now Muir Prkwy, John Swett Elementary School, John Swett High School, and John Swett Unified School District. John Muir Home Site is a National Historic Site in Martinez.

I met John Swett's son Frank in 1965, when he was in his 90's, which means he was born in the 1870's. Which means he knew Muir until he (Frank) was 39 years old. I remember him saying that the one thing Muir liked to do was to tell stories.
I met someone who knew John Muir.
