What do you do when you're in the grips of a head cold? When I'm feeling low, I often use Google Earth to return to the happy days of my youth. I worked for 8 seasons in fire control, one season as a lookout for the LaGrande Ranger District, and 7 summers on the Wallowa Unit of the Oregon State Department of Forestry. Today, as a hedge against the Dumps, I located former locations of the fire lookout towers on the LaGrande District, and all of the lookouts of the OSDF Northeast Oregon District. It's difficult to tell whether any of these lookouts are still in service, but the available GE imagery suggest that some, at least, are still standing.
Once I found the locations, I whipped out a little tour, which covered much of the country where I watched for or chased smokes. This probably won't interest much of anybody else, but I'm happy to report that my cold and my spirits are much improved.

Because I initially wrote this tour without a plan to share it, I didn't take the time to locate and purchase an appropriate recording in the public domain that I had already used on another tour. (Anyone who has attempted to add sound to a tour knows how tricky it can be to get the music and the tour to end at the same time. Once I got a match in this file, I wasn't about to go shopping for another piece of music, just because a dozen or so people had heard it before.)
There's an interesting discussion that follows the post in the old GEC, involving three of the giants of the old days (Markopolo, Gregg1956, and Kitesurfer). The part of the discussion that might be remotely interesting to people who like to make tours concerned how the "make a tour from a path" tool was significantly changed in GE 6.1xx, over what it had been in previous versions, and how that affected the ability to edit KML code.
