I recently climbed Mt Whitney and took a GPS Track which I imported into GE Pro. When I right click on the Track and bring up the Properties menu, the length shown in the Measurements tab is 10.6 miles. In the Altitude tab the "clamped to ground" setting is chosen. The 10.6 mile figure is pretty accurate based on the Mt Whitney Trail's reported 11 mile length as carefully calculated using a measuring wheel. By contrast, when I look at the same Track in the Show Elevation Profile view, the "Range Totals" distance is 10.0 miles. This is a very large discrepancy. For completeness I'll mention that I also uploaded the Track into the GPS maker's proprietary software application (Garmin BaseCamp) and it showed a 10.5 mile length.
The uploaded GPS track is composed of 1992 data points. Is it possible that the Show Elevation Profile view is short because it uses fewer data points? If anyone has an explanation, I'd be most grateful.
