Made of trees

Why not to make forestry a bit more exciting activity than a simple industrial process? Forester can insert texts -and any other pattern by the way- with 3 different methods.

1.: single plantation or outcrop (positive text), 2.: cut-out (negative text), 3.: different species (canopy color/structure differences make text visible), also combinations of these can be exist.

This is my first own find: number '2000' made of a plantation of other kind of trees than the surrounding forest-species, somewhere in Ukraine. (as an example for a mixed solution.)


Since, I have managed to spot further 3 by myself and several other locations provided by different sources, so have decided to put all together, with all references given of course.

Lot of these collected so far are Soviet slogans from former states of the USSR and Yugoslavia, but any other scenes and purposes are possible, as one can see following thread below!

Any additions are welcome!

This is one I have remembered and now I know, the 'TITO' series from the former Yugoslavia were the second. Now try to find external source for this. ...and here you are:

Besides many TITO signs made of other material (stones/white paint) managed to find 2 pieces built up by planted trees, so:

12-13.: 2 TITO plantations from the territory of former Yugoslavia (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) by 1 source: the good oGEC! (check GE layers)

Have not updated this one for a long time, now as tried a GSearch again, I have bumped into another oGEC stuff by DjDeeeeeen.

Celtic Cross:

This Celtic Cross was spotted in Killea, Donegal by passengers flying into Derry airport.

Now this breathtaking footage of the mysterious forest formation, captured by Darren Sheaffer, is going viral thanks to a report on UTV News. UTV reporter Gareth Wilkinson got to the bottom of the Celtic Cross formation, discovering some pretty amazing origins.

It was planted by forester Liam Emmery near Killea in Donegal, and is only revealed during the autumn. He created the effect using two different trees types of trees, which must have taken some SERIOUS planning.
Sadly, Emmery died after suffering brain damage in an accident six years ago. His wife Norma told UTV she knew little about her husband’s work, but knew it would make him proud.

"I’d forgotten about the plantation, if he was here, we would have all heard about it because he would have been so proud."

Horticultural expert Gareth Austin said the plantation could last sixty or seventy years, and would’ve taken a huge amount of skill to place.

Trinity Knot:

Inspired by ancient Irish designs, Jim McCabe and his family planted this sylvan Trinity Knot in the 1980s. It is located on the slopes of Tomór mountain and can be seen from the nearby N16 Sligo to Manorhamilton road. The design is best viewed in the autumn when the Japanese Larch trees change colour and contrast with the surrounding Sitka Spruce forest. According to his family, Jim privately funded and planted the Trinity Knot for the enjoyment of all. I for one, am very glad he did.

It says that the local governments planted these trees to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution (1789)

Let me add Tito's signature made of trees in ex-Yugoslavia, today in Montenegro:

Syzygy, I can't believe I never saw this post and also can't believe I've never seen a message in the trees. Of all the years I've been looking at GE, I've seen quite a few scratched in dirt, painted on roofs and mowed into lawns, but not in trees! My favorite in your collection is the palm plantation SOS. It's an entirely appropriate message.

Agree, except that this would be called my collection. (notice: only 3 of 44 by now, that had no "owner" when I have spotted on GE)

ending a B-52 shape clearcut by Rosie Leventon - UK:

Commissioned by Stour Valley Arts to make outdoor art for King's Wood, Challock, Kent UK. This piece of collaborative art was made with the help of Forest Enterprise in an area of the forest which has a monoculture of sweet chestnuts. The ideas I had for the forest were for two very different pieces. I chose the B52 Aircraft as subject matter for one of the environmental artworks because it was the time of the Iraq war and it seemed such a powerful symbol. The aircraft is a heavy American bomber one of the most efficient, long lived and destructive components of modern warfare. It is an aggressive carrier of nuclear or precision-guided weapons. My idea was to subvert the hard edges of this destructive and aggressive aircraft into an ecological negative space cut into the trees. Avenues with a difference which allow entry and exit at every point and which are always changing. The clearing created allows light and greater biodiversity into the forest. The piece was made roughly double the size of the bomber and sited on the side of a gradual slope. The other piece of land art that I made at the same time is called Ring. Both pieces were shortlisted for the Rouse Kent Award for Public Art, and Ring was the one that won it.

Dimensions: 98 x 112 m wingspan

Not far from the Elveden War Memorial (posted on oGEC by lockhopper in 2012) there is plantation of trees, forming an impressive "forest-X". 



You can find story (and further photos) for this on dailymail.co.uk also historical imagery from 1945 is available on GE. (article is slightly misleading - no trees that time(!), yet crosshairs for bombing practice)
