The first FZG-76 (V-1) buzz bombs hit England in early June, 1944. Within a month a reverse-engineered version of the Argus pulse jet was running in America. By October the complete missile was launched from a test stand at Eglin airforce base in Florida. This was possible from prior knowledge of V-1 tests in the Baltic and by examining crashed specimins from England. The weapon was developed for possible use in the proposed invasion of Japan. The American engineers abandoned the fussy and dangerous Walter steam catapult launching system and substituted a rocket take-off system. Otherwise the final missile, the JB-2 (Jet Bomb 2) was very similar to the original. The archival film below was most likely taken at Eglin; other developmental bases were : Wendover AFB, Utah. Holloman AFB, New Mexico Santa Rosa Island Range Wagner Field (formerly Eglin AFB) Florida. JB-2 Loon - the American Buzz-Bomb..kmz (1.88 KB)
