They look like basalt columns. Apparently basalt columns are formed from lava flows, so it would make sense that they would be found in Kamchatka. I can't find any mention of basalt columns on mainland Kamchatka online, though.

Hi bluesky and welcome! Yeah, basalt columns! -only did not find the english expression. Sure it has a name given by locals, which is left would be good to know. I could change file and post title from 'weird' to some-I-dunnowhat e.g. 'Whale-skeleton - Rock'. (it reminds me to giant ribs) thanks that you have spent your time on it! best, g

The Earth is Mother Nature’s canvas -- wind and water her brushes, and time her pallet.

The Earth is Mother Nature’s canvas -- wind and water her brushes, and time her pallet. well said, and we had a great collection for this art on the old forum, started by Hill /Moderator - Master Guide since the old-old-BBS GE forum times/. also if need a special sort of this kind of art check the pareidolia thread here, started by TomKjeldsen /old-old fellowmember of the community/!

There is something similar in the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range in California: the Devil's Postpile. These basalt columns are smaller but seem better formed. Earthquakes over the years have twisted and distorted some of them, and there is a large pile of rubble at the bottom. If you ever get a chance to visit this place, be sure to bring a fishing pole for trout... Attachments:Devils Postpile.kmz (688 B)

There is something similar ... Yep, not a rare phenomenon. In Hungary, the most well-known basalt organ can be found on the Balaton Uplands, near Köveskál and it is called Hegyestű (Sharpneedle). Fly to 46°53'21.96"N, 17°38'50.43"E on GE and try layers, or simply check THIS GMaps BlueDot photosphere. ... So: Devil's Postpile by you, Sharpneedle by me, but what is the name of that on Kamchatka is still a question.
