Nice job everyone. A couple of weeks ago I took visiting friends out for a picnic and to marvel how a laser was used to design this huge image of Buddha.

Nice job, everyone! I have a soft spot in my heart for this mountain for many reasons, two of which are the elephants just a few kms away, and the limestone from the mountain was used in construction of U-tapao Airport! Khao Chi Chan, or Khao Cheejan, is known to tourists as Buddha Mountain. One of the largest images of Buddha, 130 feet tall, is carved into the side of the limestone mountain by laser and inlaid with gold leaf.
The image, Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamopat Satsada was created in 1996 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Thailand's late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession the the throne.
During the Vietnam War the Thai Army used Khao Cheejan mountain for its mining efforts. The stones were used at U-Tapao Airport, which was at the time an American army base. After the war mining continued for construction purposes until 1976.
The area near Khao Chi Chan has other attractions: Buddhist temple complex Wat Yansangwararam, the Silverlake Winery, Nong Nooch Botanical Gardens (and elephants), a beautiful Chinese temple and museum, Viharn Sien, that has one of the best collections of Chinese artifacts and antiques in Thailand.
