I have created several overlays for things like hill top enclosures in my local area (Sussex). This is my first post so it will be interesting to see if I succeed with the upload and also to find out if anyone else is interested in this sort of thing. Cissbury.kmz (387.53 KB)

That's a fascinating overlay, Briand. Your post would have wider appeal if you would include a little information about the place or at least a link to a site that did, like the Wikipedia page at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cissbury_Ring . Put me down as someone who wants to see more of your work.

Thank you for the encouragement Washi. Also, thank you for the advice on supporting information. It is good to know that you are interested in this sort of thing. Cissbury was in our national news recently which revived my interest in the subject. Unfortunately the news was not good as you can see from this linkI shall indeed post some more overlays and will have a rummage. Brian Drury

Thundersbarrow Hill Sussex A location very close to where I live. Some useful background information can be seen here. The kmz contains four overlays. Two are transparent GIF's taken from published archaeological papers. I can provide details if required. The other two are overlaid jpg aerial photos (AP) which show some of the practice trenches dug by trainee soldiers during the 1914 - 1918 war. Thundersbarrow.kmz (1.81 MB)

Thanks for posting the additional files. All of your overlays are very well done, and your transparent .gif's are clear and easy to read. I was not familiar with the sites you have posted, so you had me running to Wikipedia with each download. I'll say it again: more people are going to be interested if you help them understand what you are showing them. Your work reminds me very much of my first effort to post in the old GEC back in 2006. It was a series of 4 overlay maps in a folder, which I was not able to post (because the file was too large) until I learned how to host my images online. As my confidence in posting online and my understanding of how to prepare .kml files increased, I have repeatedly revised that file. Many of my files have been revised dozens of times, but none more than Overlay Maps of Japan's 8th Century Capitals. I'm just hoping that this old man can live long enough to revise it again when the Nara Basin appears in the new 3D imagery. Please feel free to drop me a PM if you need any help or advice with you GEC projects.

Thank you for the example Washi. I now realise you were suggesting that some descriptive information should be included within the kmz file rather than a link included with the post as I have done. This is an excellent idea and your example will help me to copy you.
My next post will attempt to implement your idea.

Whitehawk Camp - BrightonThis kmz contains some overlays of the neolithic causewayed enclosure at the top of Whitehawk hill in Brighton Sussex. I have included several overlays taken from various maps and drawings. The kmz should open with only one overlay switched on and a link to Wikipedia will provide some information. The jpg provides an excellent contrast between old and new. Now edited to remove vertical exaggeration Whitehawk Camp.kmz (2.23 MB)
