What is this arrow in the water? There are similar structures elsewhere on this atoll and others nearby.

These triangles with circles seem to be related structures.
I've been guessing that they could be relics of military defensive positions or some type of fishing structures. A real photo could probably tell a lot.

What are you reffering to? I don't see anything that looks like an arrow.

The arrows are under shallow water. Look at the Tarawa atoll east shore. The best arrow is about 6 miles south of the northern tip of the atoll. Eye elevation about 1500 ft.
Sorry for late response. I thought I subscribed to this thread for email notification, but didn't see notification.

... Sorry for late response. I thought I subscribed to this thread for email notification, but didn't see notification. Few more findings and bet you will have a thought per day checking GEFourm by yourself.(: Back to the arrows and mountain-chain schemes with sun symbols under shallow water: well, I think might be something about fishing, not sure anyway. Still you have put these up I have a feeling, that I have already seen these, many years ago, brought up in some of the previous GEForum versions while cannot find anything yet. I have bookmarked this thread, will keep an eye on subject dude! Welcome around here and best, g

Thanks for the help syzygy and others. Fishing is my best guess too. I have only saw the structures on inhabited islands in that area.

I believe they are fishing weirs. The tide rises, the fish swim in, the tide goes out and the fish are trapped in shallow water inside the weir. Some of the weirs we have spotted must have taken many years to construct. Most of them are about 150 feet wide and have a "walkway" or tail to the arrow that stretches back to shore for several hundred feet. I found a series of the weirs that went out about 1500 feet on another atoll south of Tarawa. Check out the cover to this book. www.amazon.com/Pacific-Islands-Sea-Reporting-Fishponds/dp/0965978214

(I'm hooked on the fishing weir theory BTW! ) Anyway zoom to this one and find a nice picture of one of them somebody has left for us:

There are a number of threads in the original GEC forums about fish traps. There is good thread HERE.
