Antoine de Saint Exupéry did not return from a reconnaissance mission in southern france to his base in corsica and was missing. For almost 60 years, his aircraft was one of the most wanted wrecks researchers have been searching for. 1998 a bracelet of Saint Exupery was found by Jean Claude Bianco, a fisherman cleaning his net. Finally in 2000, the french diver Luc Vanrell found parts of the wreck of a P-38 near Marseille. This wreck was identified in 2003 with the help of Philippe Castellano. In 2005 i met Luc and Philippe to work on a research concerning a german DB601 engine found on the same location. This research directed me to the german fighter pilot, who likely shot down the P-38 the 31. July 1944. ( source: www.u-air.info/www/uair/uair.nsf/0/BF252935D76CAD62C12577AE006F4F1A?OpenDocument )

If you quote someone else's words without clearing indicating that you are quoting, by using quotation marks or some other means, you create the impression that the words are your own. I was really impressed that the discoverer of the plane wreck of such a famous person bothered to share his discovery on this forum. I wanted to ask you more about how you located Herr Rippert, and other details of your exciting discovery.
But now I suspect that you are not the person who did this research, but just another guy who found something genuinely interesting on the internet and who knows how to use the cut and paste functions on his computer.

@ Washi: I don't remember you ever writing a post without insulting/discrediting/criticising others - especially first-timers. Maybe that's why many never show up again.

It is unethical (and so easy to avoid) using someone else's words without making it abundantly clear that they are not your own. Whether you do it, or I do it, or Melania Trump does it, it is still plagiarism.
A post written in the first person, with no indication that the words are being quoted, certainly suggests that the poster is talking about himself. It is not unprecedented that a person who made a significant discovery should share it on the GEC. I was disappointed to learn that this is apparently not the case. I still liked the post (which in my case always means that I recommend it to fellow members), but in my haste to make another reply before I left home, I'm afraid I didn't chose my words as carefully as I should. I let my frustration with people who apparently cruise the internet searching for tidbits to copy and paste into the GEC color my words to halley. The phrase "just another guy who found something genuinely interesting on the internet and who knows how to use the cut and paste functions on his computer" does have a dismissive tone which I regret, and for which, halley, I apologize. I only hope that in the future you explain in your own words why you are calling our attention to something in Google Earth, or at least make it clear that the words you are uploading belong to someone else.
As far as my disagreeing with your interpretation, siggi, of the unusual bands of cultivated and uncultivated land near Pendleton, Oregon, is concerned, I explained why I disagreed and I did so in a civil manner and gave you no cause to be offended. As for my body of responses to other members, I think on the whole they are polite and done in a spirit of helpfulness, although I concede that I do from time to time enjoy taking potshots at posters who appear not to be completely sober or who are flogging irrational nonsense.
If you like, I will be happy to send you links to a sample of recent replies which I feel do not insult, discredit, or criticize the poster, just so you have something nice to remember about me.
