A couple years ago, just playing with orbiting Earth, I did a fly-over of the sub-arctic ocean, near New Zealand. Okay I was pretending to fly a Star Trek-like personal shuttle with an engine problem, needing to land. I do that for fun sometimes. I flew over several islands, but most had airports and/or towns.
To the east of New Zealand, I came across a small uninhabited island, kind of nondescript. I "landed", then surveyed the island with Street View.
After some research online I found that island was called Antipodes (An-Tippid-eze). I had to do an online search because the island didn't have a name marker. Is there a way to have Google Earth updated with a name marker for Antipodes and other un-marked islands?
Anyway, thanks to Google Sketchup, I've used that island since discovering it as an unofficial island "base", adding 3D models to it that I made or downloaded, in the vein of a M*A*S*H-style outpost. I'd figure that if a small base or outpost was erected with New Zealand's permission, it'd have to be easily removable.
For me, Google Earth is tons of fun if you like visually exploring, finding new lands, exploring childhood neighborhoods that you can find from memory in 30 seconds or less...or studying alternate streets to take to get somewhere and back if construction crews have closed off entire streets. My girlfriend drives but can't navigate very well. I can't drive - a golf cart, yes - but I can navigate. Google Earth and Maps is a good way to learn new routes.
Added pic of the small "base" model I built (most of the buildings except the mess hall are from the Google 3D warehouse)
