Kml is a file type that is opened by Google Earth. It is a plain text in xml format. Therefore, materials such as images used in the file are defined as mere links to their physical locations. As a response to the need to have and keep those files together with the kml file, the authors of Google Earth introduced the ability for Google Earth to load a zip file where all the linked files are archived together, and named it kmz. The links to those files in the kml are meanwhile properly changed to load them from the archive. By simply renaming a kmz file, one can access the files via any archive application like Winzip or Winrar.
