As these things go, one thing led to another and I saw an enormous project in the Gobi Desert. This is what I learned: Construction began in the summer of 2015 on massive solar power plant in China. It will cover 25 sq. kms near Dunhuang, Qinghai Province, generate 200 megawatts and supply power to 1 million households. "The development underlines the commitment of China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter, to renewable power." The GE image is July 3, 2015, and shows an impressive number of panels, or at least the bases for panels, already installed. It is a joint project of BrightSource Energy of Oakland, California (nice contract, guys!) and Shanghai Electric Group. China will burn 4.26 million tons less coal every year, equal to an annual reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of 896,000 tons and sulphur dioxide emissions of 8,080 tons. "China is currently the world’s most active investor into renewable energy generation. Only ten years ago there was barely 70 megawatts worth of solar power plants in China." Capacity is currently about 30 gigawatts and steadily growing. Gobi Desert solar plant.kmz (822 B)
