Hi everyone, this is my first visit. I've been exploring GE for a while and just yesterday came across this strange piece of writing in Western Sahara, on a mountainside north of a fort on the infamous "Moroccan Berm" (Sand Wall which extends north to south across the whole country). It is just inside Moroccan occupied Western Sahara. Coordinates:
26d 55' 55.64 N 9d 19' 32.17 W Eye Altitude 628 metres(sorry if my notation is not good) I'm not sure if it is actually painted onto the mountain or has been added later. Perhaps anyone who can speak Arabic could translate it and maybe we can then have some clue as to why it is there, in that particular spot, in the middle of the desert. Here is a link to an image of it on Gyazo gyazo.com/ded0bdd52bd494aeb7b8854a17ce5395and here is a link to a wider angle shot including the fort on the Berm. gyazo.com/036610103fae1918625830e23a69cfacDoes anyone know what it is or why it is there? Thanks John.

Hi John, and welcome to the New Google Earth Community. Google earth and the kml/kmz files which were designed to make sharing of places very easy. I strongly suggest you read and become familiar with the basics of describing locations using kmz's. You can find a thread HERE. Trying to describe a location by using lat/long coordinates often leads to errors as it has with your example. Written in the form you have used search will not work when pasted into the box. 26d 55' 55.64 N 9d 19' 32.17 W does not work. 26 55 55.64 N 9 19 32.17 W does work - sort of. It finds a place on the map but not the location you have for which you sent a screen capture. 26°58'53.85"N 9°19'33.42"W does take me there. All that being said I have no idea of what this Arabic graffiti says, but it probably says something like "Victory to our glorious soldiers". It is adjacent to a very long system of walls and fortresses involved in the Western Sahara territorial dispute. See THIS.

Thank you for your reply and helpful advice, Hill. I didn't know about posting an actual place marker, so will try to attach it now. OK, I added it and hope that I did it right Yeah, the text is a bit of a mystery to me, It is just north of the "Great Wall of Morocco", which divides Western Sahara in half - The Moroccan side from the Sahwari side. I thought maybe someone could translate it and I could find out if it was a Sahwari painting or a Moroccan one (or maybe added later onto one of the photo plates). The whole country is a disputed area, being still officially a Spanish colony as they never really released it and Morocco invaded it when the Spanish left.

That did it! Easy enough, right? And thanks for the descriptive term "Moroccan Wall". I was able to find more about it HERE.

Good find, John, I'm surprised it had not been marked before. I once followed the Moroccan wall and forts for a very long distance on Google Earth. Quite an interesting history and feat.
