This story is only funny when it's not happening you you. Imagine hearing noises, investigating and seeing this in your cat door! And, this isn't the first time. Bears really want to move in at Doug Harder's house in Sandpoint, Idaho, and they sort of have. He lives in a condo, not a single-family dwelling. Here's what he saw in May on a second floor deck: I can't tell what's in that feeder, but mother bear has apparently found an easy source of food for the kids. "Then, this Wednesday, Harder came home from a few days away to find a mess inside his condo, likely left behind by a bear that pushed through his sliding glass door. The bear likes flour, brownie mix, Toblerone, and Pepsi, Harder said. The next morning, this bear was standing up on Harder's deck." For those of you who don't already know, "mess" would have been an understatement. Bears tear up a place. That leads us back to the first photo. The bear's cat door break-in happened Thursday night (Aug. 13th). Harder said it didn't scare him because he knew it wouldn't fit through the tiny door. The bear left upon being caught by Harder's flash, but I'll bet she's not finished. Things are just too familiar at the Harder household by now. It seems any sane person would be terrified, just because once they are successful, bears don't stop. The location is a wild guess based on what's in the story. Bear break-ins Idaho.kmz (788 B)

From THIS STORY, it seems to me that this area is a more likely location. If so, it seems to be even less a story of bears invading human space (and more the other way on).

Yes, that's certainly the spot! Thanks for the update, washi. This photo cracked me up, more evidence that cats just don't care... Hm, must be the first bear in history to do "very little damage" and, really, I would consider defecating on my carpet quite a bit of damage!

So the next time someone asks if a bear does that in the woods....

You are correct, Gregg, the answer is, "No, he does it on the carpet." Good to get that cleared up.
