Hillary. author and Battle of Britain Spitfire ace was killed, along with his crew-member Sgt. Fison. when their Bristol Blenheim crashed near this spot while on a night training exercise. Hillary, very badly burned after being downed by a Bf 109 during the Battle of Britain, had recuperated enough to rejoin active service in the RAF. He was flying out of nearby RAF Chartwell.
