While perusing Frank's post on the bomb explosion at RAF Metfield, I was struck by the number of pill-boxes in the area. This led to a rough survey of these features within 25 km of Metfield. There appears to be at least 145 of them in this small corner of war-time England! This number excludes all other military aspects such as ant-aircraft sites, bomb shelters, tank traps etc. etc. Imagine the cost of building all of these! Not only is war hell, it is extremely expensive. (I believe that the Brits only recently paid off their war debt.) By the way, Street View often produces a current picture of some of these emplacements.

How did you locate all of them? Which imagery? I can't see them at all, though I only looked at about a dozen X's.

Thanks for the clarification, Norm. I should have cited that source - I use it all the time. In this case some of the items have been removed, some are visible in 1945 and some are in sight of 'Streetview'.
