Torre Monticchio, aka Torre Petrara is a Medieval Watchtower in the village of Monticchio, Latina, Italy. There is little I could find on the Internet for this outpost built in the Middle Ages near the bigger town of Sermoneta. Originally built on a steep hill to watch for attacks across the Pontine Plain, the hill has been extensively quarried to the point that the tower now sits atop a rock spire with no direct access. In Google Earth you can see the quarried area surrounding the tower. Some of my cohorts here may remember seeing this after a fine Italian dinner in Monticchio after a very, very rainy day! Needs a file, Barn, so I can fly there again! Tried to find that place once with no luck.
Now that I see the shot, I do remember it! Such an odd item in the landscape. I also remember thinking when driving in the countryside that it was amazing to see random old-to-ancient ruins just "lying around" on farms, roadsides, hills, etc. Hard for someone from a new world country to absorb.
