A few hours ago a volcano erupted on Kuchinoerabu Island (口永良部島). The eruption involves the ejection of magma, and not merely steam. Pyroclastic flows have reportedly reached the coastline.

Fortunately, the island is sparsely inhabited, and the 130 inhabitants have been advised to evacuate under a Level 5 (the highest) Alert.
