I found the following terrain while looking through the desert in Egypt... Does anyone have any theories about what we are seeing here?

These are exciting salt formations in the Qattara Depression (wikipedia link), 80 meters below sea level. Quotes from wikipedia: "The Qattara Depression lies below sea level, and its bottom is covered with salt pans, sand dunes, and salt marshes." "Within the Depression are salt marshes, under the northwestern and northern escarpment edges, and extensive dry lake beds that flood occasionally. The marshes occupy approximately 300 square kilometres (120 sq mi), although wind-blown sands are encroaching in some areas. About a quarter of the region is occupied by dry lakes composed of hard crust and sticky mud, and occasionally filled with water. The depression was initiated by either wind or fluvial erosion in the late Neogene, but during the Quaternary Period the dominant mechanism was a combination of salt weathering and wind erosion working together. First, the salts break up the depression floor, then the wind blows away the resulting sands." Great spotting!

Thank you! I can't remember when I first came across this area, but it is exciting to finally have an answer.

You're welcome! Widespread use of GE Pro layers with additional web-searches are leading to relevant informations in most cases. If I need geographical name of a specific, smaller area and there is none I can look up on GE then another global map tool that often helps me out. For alternative satellite imagery (with wikimedia photo layer) and the most detailed local geographical names database check Mapcarta! ( ;
