Now known as the Monck Road , it was first surveyed in 1864 - 65. The construction of the road was completed in 1873. It's purpose was to provide a secure route for military traffic from the Ottawa area to Upper Canada, away from the St. Lawrence river and the Great Lakes where there was danger from Fenian raids and the American Civil War. The road was commissioned by Governor- General Lord Monk (1861 -68). It was never used for military purposes but became instead colonization road. Much of the original right of way is still drivable and passes several interesting old farm-steads. Street View covers it's length. Monck Military Road - Revised.kmz (12.14 KB)
