The I B & O railway was originally founded as a means of transporting iron ore from Irondale to Ottawa. This never reached its goal as it was discovered that the iron ore was of a poor quality. Thereafter the I B & O provided freight and passenger service from Howland to York River after 1910. At one time a one-way trip from Bancroft to Toronto was possible. The line was initiated in 1879 and was abandoned by 1960, driven out of business by improved roads and automobiles.
