In order to provide landing facilities for supplies for the D-Day invasion 213 Pheonix caissons were constructed in England. They were fabricated at Stokes Bay, then sunk to hide them. Subsequently they were re-floated and towed by barge to the invasion beaches, where many are still visible. After the war several were sent to Holland, Sweden and Iceland to serve as docks and breakwaters. Mulberry Caissons in England.kmz (2.07 KB)
