On the night of February 13, 1941 a Heinkel 111 dropped an unusually large 2500 kg bomb (SC2500 MAX) on Ravenstone Road. This was, at the time, a residential of terraced houses and small businesses. The explosion cleared an area 400 meters in diameter. 75 were killed and 148 injured. 196 houses were destroyed, 170 were rendered uninhabitable and 480 were damaged. The government of the day suppressed information regarding the incident. 1500 pre-fabs were constructecd to house survivors, these are clearly visible in the 1945 aerial photo. By the year 1999 the area was re-developed. Some bodies were never recovered. The likely target for this rarely used bomb was probably the De Haviland plant 2.4 km north-west of Ravenstone Road.
