When you think of a pond or lake you typically think of clear blue waters. However, this is not always the case. Many ponds, lakes, and rivers around the world have different colors, depending on a variety of circumstances. This collection documents these weirder colored bodies of water around the world. The collection is split into four folders: • Colored Lakes: wildly colorful lakes - pinks, reds, greens, shades of blue. These are caused by microorganisms in the water, sedimentation, or other factors. • Tailings Dam Failures: a tailings dam is typically an earth-fill embankment dam used to store byproducts of mining operations after separating the ore from the gangue (the worthless materials). Over the past two decades there have been a couple noteworthy dam failures that can be seen in Google Earth, which are highlighted here. • Red Mud Storage Ponds: Red Mud is another word for bauxite residue or tailings, an industrial waste created during the processing of bauxite (an aluminum ore) into alumina using the Bayer process. It is high in iron oxide, giving it its reddish brown color. Seen here are tailings dams for bauxite around the world, highlighting its bright red color. • Salt Evaporation Ponds: these ponds are shallow, artificial salt pans designed to extract salt from sea water or other salty water. The seawater or brine (very salty water) is fed into large ponds and the water is slowly evaporated out, allowing the salt to be harvested. They often have a wide variety of colors depending on the salinity. Colorful Water of the World (11/8/2012): drive.google.com/file/d/1E_BgPgsyIp0KdyzN70q7mXWLgPDbWdBV/view?usp=sharing
