Hi, I have recently come across the survival story of Mauro Prosperi in the Sahara Desert Short Story: He is an athlete and was competing in a marathon (Marathon des Sables) in Ouarzazate, Morocco. After a sandstorm he got confused and lost the path of the race. He wandered in the desert for 10 days and several hundred kilometers, eventually found an abandoned Marabout Shrine and passed three days there, where he left several messages for his family, he hung an italian flag on top, he carved an SOS message on the ground, ate bats to keep himself alive, and even tried to kill himself (without success). Then he kept walking for a lot, ending up crossing the border with Algeria and finally being rescued in Tindouf. You can find several more informations here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauro_Prosperi and around the internet. The Shrine: Now, the shrine is a very important landmark of his tale and he even returned there once! Also a movie was shot and the filming location was the real shrine, so it's possible to find it again: In 1995, a Roman film crew retraced Prosperi’s steps for a reenactment documentary of his survival.[9] The filming crew located the Marabout shrine in which Prosperi rested and discovered some of his possessions, along with several bat skeletons.I have been trying to reconstruct the path of Mauro Prosperi and locate the Shrine, but I failed. Does anyone have more informations or would like to help in the search? Thank you!
