Traversing up and down a steep gradient requires a specialized transportation system. Inclined lifts (also called inclined elevators) and funiculars (both also called inclined planes) are one such method. Working in similar ways, both are types of cable railways, in which a cable or rope is used to haul trains. An inclined elevator differs from a funicular in that the latter has a cable attached to a pair of vehicles, the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalancing each other. In the inclined elevator one car is either winched up to the station at the top of the incline where the cable is collected on a winch drum, or the single car is balanced by a counterweight. This collection has both inclined elevators (red color), funiculars (green color), and canal inclined planes (blue color), which instead of pulling a train or elevator, pulls a caisson or cradle to raise boats between different water levels.
Collection currently has 493 Railways, in 59 countries across 6 continents.
