Ukiyo-e is the name for a historically determined genre of Japanese painting and woodprint graphics. As an example, the well-known work "The Wave".
Although the beautiful images of landscapes, people, animals and folk tales were once popular, the craft began to dwindle in the 20th century. Now there are only about 50 Ukiyo-e artists in Japan. In Kyoto, one more can be found. Ichimura Mamoru, owner and resident artist of the studio and curator of the tiny museum, is happy to talk to visitors and maybe even customers about his work and even show you how the prints are made. He has been practicing the art of ukiyo-e for decades, having learned from his grandfather as a teenager. Incidentally, I like the motto of the man excellently.

The Pablo-Fierro-Museum is a fairytale-like building in Puerto Varas (Chile) highlights the region’s human history. The area around Lake Llanquihue in Chile’s stunning Lake District is characterized by a surprising fusion of the traditional Chilote culture of the Chiloé Archipelago with that of the German farmers who made this corner of South America their home in the 1850s. Very little in the museum is off-limits, and curious callers are invited to touch and play with the antiques and artifacts collected within.

These are great, willi ! So is the Gopher Museum added by Scraps. I had a good laugh at these and glad I discovered your thread. Oh - and I like the Japanese man's work hours! Here is my contribution: the Idaho Potato Museum in Blackfoot, Idaho. They have a Potato Cafe! Yummy! And, a gift shop, where you can buy many potato-related things, such as this old-time candy bar that I used to see when I was a child. Potato Museum.kmz (802 B) I have to be fair to my home area, the Klamath Basin of Oregon, which is also known for growing potatoes. It's one of few food crops that will grow to maturity in our high desert climate. Reportedly, most of ours go to french fry and potato chip manufacturers, but I don't know where Idaho's go. Nicknames for potatoes in both states (we're neighbors) are spuds or taters.

This is the Gann Building Museum in Benton (Arkansas). Its walls are made out of bauxite, the aluminum ore to which this area owes much of its prosperity. This three-room office was built by hand in 1893 for Dr. Dewell Gann by patients who could not otherwise afford to pay their doctor bills. Because bauxite is relatively soft right out of the ground, the builders sawed the blocks square with handsaws and allowed them to harden in the sun for six weeks before assembling them into this gingerbread house, which served as the Gann Medical office from 1893 to 1946. Bauxite is not generally used as a building material because of the softness of the stone, yet plenty of brick buildings built since 1893 have crumbled into dust, while the Gann Building has stood for over a hundred years. The building appeared in Ripley's Believe it or Not as the only bauxite building in the world; and since nobody has challenged the claim, the people of Benton assume that it is true. The Museum has an extensive collection of Niloak and other pottery, Indian Artifacts, memorabilia and history of Saline County, as well as artifacts and memorabilia of Dr. Gann Sr. and Jr.
