When the German emperor Wilhelm II abdicated in 1919 he took refuge in Holland at Huis Doorn (Doorn Manor). Here he spent his time chopping trees into firewood (he was known as the 'Woodchopper of Doorn) so much so that he partially denuded the estate. He never returned to Germany and died at Doorn in 1941. He is buried on the estate which is now a museum. Huis Doorn.kmz (738 B)
