Early night flights carrying air mail were very dangerous because of the lack of navigational equipment. To remedy this a system of yellow concrete arrows (pointing in the direction of the next arrow) were constructed in the 1920's. The installation usually consisted of the yellow concrete arrow, a tower with a rotatng light on it and a generator shed. Thhis network produced a ground-based navigational system for air mail pilots. (Charles Lindburgh was one such pilot). By the 1930's aircraft navigational instruments had improved to such a degree that the concrete arrows were obsolete. ( The internet contains many sources of information on these arrows, many of which are still visible.) Air Mail Directional arrows.kmz (1.24 KB)
