Here is a clue: The dog’s grave is about 50 metres down the road from the sculpture. The dog was killed by its master, a king, after he wrongfully suspected that it had killed his child. But in fact the dog had saved his child.

Thanks for the clue. I think I will have to give up this malarkey - I have walked that nice winding path, past the dog and the grave and still didn't get the answer! Doh!

The answer: The sculpture refers to the legend about the dog Gelert, which I mentioned in the clue. His master was the Welsh prince Llewellyn the Great (c.1173-1240). Town of Beddgelert (Gelert’s grave), county Caernarfon, Wales. 53.0085°N, 4.1028°W
