This posting is a correction for my post of 2008/02/25, 160 meters south of this mark. The correction became necessary when I viewed the video of the burials. The grave markers are visible in the trees and there is a memorial stone (mahnmal). See photo beside this marker. The burial scenes begin at 7:24:38:00 - 14 seconds into the film. As depicted in Ken Burns' series on World War Two ('The War'), on May 2nd, 1945 American soldiers (82nd Airborne and 8th Infantry Divisions of the 9th US Army) liberated this area and forced the citizens of this town and locality to bury the dead bodies of prisoner/slaves collected from the near-by concentration/transit camp of Wobbelin.( This camp-site is marked on the road half-way between Ludwigslust and Wobbelin - see Google marker for information.) The burials were carried out in this park, in front of the church so that all would be aware of what had happened. Other victims were buried in Schwerin, Hagenow and Wobbelin. (My thanks to James Goodspeed, USHMM Fellow for information on Ludwigslust and Wobbelin) Concentration camp victims buried in Ludwig....kmz (1.29 KB)

Two years ago I drove the road 106 from Ludwigslust direction Wöbbelin without knowing anything about these camps and memorials. By chance I saw from the road a memorial stone at my left: KZ-Aussenlager Wöbbelin. Poignant situation: A son of Adolf Frankl a former Auschwitz inmate on location with his family, coming from Vienna to remember. Back home I read the story about the camps in that area. The Ludwigslust memorial and a Sovjet military cemetary at Hagenow (including 144 graves of and a memorial stone for Wöbbelin victimes) to visit on the occasion of a future trip.
