Jones-Emberson 1 is a planetary nebula about 1600 light years away, in the constellation Lynx. Let's take a look at two different images... Credit: Bob Franke Credit: Bob Franke These are both by the same astrophotographer, both of the same PN, so why are they different colors? Because the green one was shot with a narrow band filter, the red one with just natural colors (unfiltered). Filters are available for telescopes that filter out certain bands of light and allow others to come through.
