On January 31, 1953 a combination of high tides and a severe storm surge breached the dykes at several locations in the Netherlands. Much of the country was flooded resulting in enormous damage and 2551 deaths. Four war surplus (?!) caissons, originally intended for the D-Day landings, were towed from England to this location in order to plug the last gap in the dyke. This effort was successful and the Pheonix caissons now form an interesting museum dedicated to the flood and its aftermath. Watersnood Flood museum.kmz (1019 B)

A digital version of the museum allows a view inside the impressive dimensions of the caissons structure. More of these caissons are still visible on the shore of Arromanches → Mulberry B.
