I was in the process of reposting on Facebook a post that I made, many years ago, about the Heian Gū, the ancient government complex established at the end of the 8th century in what is now Kyoto, when I realized the download link for my Links Files in the new Google Earth Community is no longer viable (the forum in which I had posted it having been essentially discontinued. I am now posting it here.
I have long been a believer in the value of Google Earth to present longer narratives in which understanding can be enhanced by cartographical perspective, the kind of files of which the work of LuciaM was an inspiration. My own interests often called for Overlays and other file types which would not be displayed in the GEC Layer, or if they were, would be meaninglessly out of context, and therefore mere clutter. I also believe in the value of being able to offer users the opportunity to load optional related content from within a file, something which I suppose is still difficult to do using content available only from the GEC Forums.
Looking back on those exciting years when I could envision the GEC providing an audience for the kinds of files I was interested in producing, one aspiration seems to be a common thread running through most of the work I created, and that was to "press the envelope" of what the Google Earth tool was capable of presenting. Almost every major project I posted was not only an exploration of my curiosity about the subject matter, but also to some degree an experiment in techniques, sometimes needing to be clawed back when development of the application closed a gap that I was attempting to exploit.
If anyone is interested, perhaps I should explain that while the Links file doesn't appear to fit into any of the premade file types, it is actually a Folder with a redefined icon, into which 3 other similar Folders have been placed, and links have been established which allow the user to move between the window displays of all 4. I hit upon this odd solution out of two priories: 1) to keep content out of the old GEC Layer and 2) to make my files accessible to people who were not logged on members of the GEC.. Page 1 contains mostly complex files about Japanese history and culture. Page 2 has links mostly to less complex files about Japan, although some which began as simple files grew to be more complex in subsequent revisions. Page 3 has links to files about other topics. Page 4 contains reconstructed posts I made in the original Google Earth Community about favorite KML techniques, with example files (when the Links file is enabled or "ticked on").
