Yesterday the news in Japan was dominated by two stories. One was the extreme winter weather, with the entire country experiencing very cold temperatures and unusually heavy snow falls. (As just one of many examples, a JR train near Kyoto was stuck in the snow for at least 10 hours.)
The other was an announcement of the discovery of two (as far as I can determine) unique objects in a tomb mound in the extreme west edge of the city of Nara. One was a rectangular mirror about 1 x 2 feet. The other was a sword about 7 feet long. Both are dated from the late 4th century.
Except for the first link, all of the information is in Japanese, so unless your browser has installed translation software, you'll only get to see a few photos. I doubt that many members beside me will be much interested, but I am posting this placemark as a test. I have been trying for many weeks to revise my more important posts. I can edit the text, but I am locked out of attaching the revised files. This post is mostly a test to see if I can attach a .kmz file to a post in the nGEC forums.
As I can't find a way to attach my placemark, I might as well embed a video:

Recently, a temporary shelter was built over the "tsukuri dashi," the small platform at the base of the circular kofun, where a shield shaped mirror and a 7 foot "serpentine" sword were unearthed last year. These two objects, which are extremely rare, have greatly puzzled the Japanese archeology community. Work began today to excavate the clay encased wooden coffin which was discovered last year but not opened. It is hoped that its contents will shed some light on the person buried there and the origins of the mysterious objects.
