The funicular railway transported tourists to the crater of Mount Vesuvius from 1880 until 1944 when an eruption of the volcano destroyed the upper two-thirds of the rail line. Originally a surface line (blue) carried passengers from Pugliano to Centrale From there a rack and pinion line (yellow) took passengers to Hotel Eremo where they boarded another surface line (blue) to the lower funicular station. Then it was on to the funicular line to the upper station at the crater edge. The upper section of the funicular line has been buried by volcanic ash and lava. Much of the lower section is still visible. In 1953 a chair lift was constructed to carry tourists up to the c rater. However high wind and safety concerns caused this to be ended in 1984. Some of the pylon bases are still visible. sorrentowithbellson.wordpress.com/2021/10/23/a-post-about-the-famous-funicular-railway-up-mount-vesuvius/www.pompeiiinpictures.com/pompeiiinpictures/Vesuvius/Vesuvius%20p2.htmVesuvius Funicular Railway.kmz (3.22 KB)
