This historically and scientifically important apparatus was first marked by 'Wilkus' in the very early days of the GEC. The antenna is so significant that I feel it should be re-posted for our current members. To quote Wilkus directly ... 'Location of the 50 foot horn antenna used by Robert W. Wilson and Arno Penzias in their Nobel Prize-winning work that supported the "Big Bang" Theory of Cosmology.' The antenna was built in the early 1960's for satellite communication and radio telescopy. In 1965 Wilson and Penzias detected the cosmic background microwave radiation (CMBR), thus confirming the big bang theory and earning them the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1978. The detection of the echoes of the big bang ended Hoyle's steady state theory of the universe. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1988. There are two good pictures of the site but no street view. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmdel_Horn_AntennaHistoric Horn Antenna.kmz (1.23 KB)

Thanks for this essential, all have to know about! Also we cannot praise too much times these great minds; Penzias and Wilson for their brilliant recognition that brought not only breaktrough in physics, but fundamentaly has reshaped Worldview of the modern man. ... with such a monstrous, tin scrapheap*!?!... ( : *I believe that Mr. Barrow would forgive me this evil comparsion. - R. I. P.
