Not very far from Yemen's border with Oman is a mysterious "Barhout Pit" about 30 metres (100 feet) wide. Its actual depth has not been ascertained as yet and could 100 to 250 metres (330 to 820 ft). As per locals superstition it is "Well of Hell" created on the Earth to serve as a prison for demons and is haunted by the souls of sinful and immoral persons. Some local residents say that they heard the screams and cries of these dark souls being tortured within the depths of this Well of Hell. The locals avoid going near it as they feel that they would be sucked into the hole. As per geologists it is a deep sink hole caused by the erosion of limestone. Some believe that it could a volcano which will eventually erupt although no evidence of volcanic activity has been noticed so far. The putrid smell of sulphur coming out from the well is probably caused by bats or by rock weathering due heat and moisture.
