The haunting, abandoned residential development of Burj al Babas is rightly called "Disneyesque." Row upon row of hundreds of identical castle-like houses sit in a pretty valley near the town of Mudurnu in northern Turkey. Construction began in 2014, but no one lives there, because the massive project went bankrupt. By then, 587 houses were partially completed of 732 planned, as well as a large mall that was to include a theater, baths, sports facilities, retail shops and more. SourceGrandiose, $200 million failed developments are fairly common around the world. What makes this one unique is the eerie quality of a valley full of empty, miniature French chateaux. In many photos and videos of the place, there are doors and windows open and the occasional car driving through. No guards or gates are visible. There does not seem to be any graffiti, theft of wires, metal or leftover building supplies, as there would be in most of the rest of the world. One can't help but think of the terrible waste of money in materials and labor. It did make an interesting setting for a music video called Lose Control. Burj al Babas.kmz (766 B)
