This three-sided monument commemorates the three young Polish mathematicians (Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Rozycki and Henryk Zygalski) who began breaking the 'Enigma' machine code which the German military was using in the 1930's. Their work was shared with both the French and British and culminated in the successful work at Bletchley Park. (Street view shows the monument as well as the Cryptology Museum in the background.)
They did the world a great favour and, and in the long run, saved many lives. If the European war had gone on for another three months nuclear weapons might have been used in Europe. 'It was a close run thing' to quote Wellington.
