People who do not undersatnd history want to destroy memorials. The name of the memorial was an indication of Japan's surrender being unconditional. From History.com
"On August 10, 1945, just a day after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan submits its acquiescence to the Potsdam Conference terms of unconditional surrender" This statue (#5) can still be seen in Google Maps if you drop pegman behind it. The photo in Google Earth was taken after the statue was initially removed in 2012. The photo which inspired the statue(s)

Yup, the Seward Johnson sculpture based on the well-known Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph V–J day in Times Square. Controversial, as some have noted. Well done all those who found the original five and kudos all those bonuses - who would have thought there were so many?
