Operation 'Gold' was modelled on an earlier Operation 'Silver' which had successfully spied on Soviet communications in Vienna by using tunnels in order to tap telephone lines. The Berlin version was a joint S.I.S. - C.I.A. venture and involved driving a half kilometer tunnel from a dummy warehouse in the U.S. zone into the Soviet sector of Berlin. Under Schonefelder Chaussee a secret chamber was constructed where three telephone trunk lines were successfully tapped. The tunnel operated from May 1955 to April 1956 when the secret was uncovered. Setting the time slider to 1953 shows the farmland just before construction began. The site of the 'warehouse' was subsequently filled with houses.
