St Mary's, Purley on Thames
On December 20th 1914 after doing “an act of kindness” by conducting evensong at St Margaret’s Church, Mapledurham, John ferried himself back to Purley across the Thames. Tragically, his boat was swept away by the strong current over the weir and he drowned. His body was not recovered for five weeks, having been carried down river to Henley on Thames.

He was buried near the porch of St Mary the Virgin on January 26th 1915 and a memorial was erected to his memory in the chancel and at Mapledurham.
