‘Steps at Wick’ was painted in 1936 by L S Lowry and portrays the Blackstairs in the Pulteneytown area of Wick, Caithness. Broad and steep, The Blackstairs were built of long, Caithness flagstone in the 1820s.
Wick was Europe's largest herring port from the 18th until the early 20th Century. The steps were part of Thomas Telford’s plan for Pulteneytown, linking the residential area with the harbour below. Lowry, who grew up in Salford, was famous for his matchstick figure art regularly spent holidays in Scotland in the 1930s.
