During WW1 the U.S. government found itself short of vessels for transportation of men and materials to the conflict in Europe. To remedy this a plan was made to quickly construct a fleet of wooden, steam-powered cargo ships. The war ended before the ships could be employed and since steel was available once again the fleet of wooden ships was abandoned and burnt to the waterline. There are approximately 230 wrecks here: they now form an ecological haven for marine life. www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-ghost-fleet-of-mallows-bay-nanjemoy-marylandThe Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay.kmz (1.14 KB)
