There has been some talk about "the old days" of F&G recently, not only of places to find but also some "tricks" that were used too, and in fact it's been a while since I've been thinking about this: in the old days, the F&G puzzles were all GE images (satellite), because SV didn't even exist! We would just post a satellite image and an image of the place usually taken from the Internet or sometimes a personal photo, because there was no reverse image searching either! Only keywords. And some puzzles required "thinking out of the box" or looking for the solution hidden carefully by the poster >> in some original way<<. I remember one of those that had me going for a long time, because I didn't understand how others had found it (what else is new!). Until I found it too, and groaned at the solution. So I thought I'd post it here now, a SV version of it. Let's see if even today you can find this:

I spent the last few hours searching for every place/brand in the world called wink or the solution. This is evil. I will have revenge.

Evil? Nooooo. Not heaven, not hell, but nice and quiet, judging by the SV images.

I need to ask something johnluke ... Does it involve searching in an older forum? If so, I found this one but I can't know if it's the correct one

I need to ask something johnluke ... Does it involve searching in an older forum? If so, I found this one but I can't know if it's the correct one No, it doesn't, but it does refer (as said in the OP) to a puzzle from the old F&G. I don't see how you could find it that way. In fact, I think it would be hard to find it even knowing the answer. I wouldn't mind seeing the original again, if someone out there can find it? No doubt it is an advantage to have known the old forum, because you'd remember the puzzle... but hey, at that time, we had no help, so try and find this the same way we did.

Well done to the old timers who remembered this puzzle or had forgotten it and solved it again! Kudos to ndrqu who didn't know it and solved it. If anyone else is still interested, here is a clue:

I had the solution many hours ago, just didn't know it was Yes, search results now seem to concentrate on the map you are presently seeing, which means that all manner of companies, shops, restaurants and the like are deemed more important than towns that are a little farther away. I recommend www.geonames.org and geody.com for this kind of search.

If anyone else is still interested, here is a clue: I honestly don't understand a single word of this puzzle and the "clues" given to it. The only word you need is the name of the place. It appears twice in the op, and several times in this thread and the clues. This is all you need to know.

That's probably what I thought too years ago when I saw the original version of this puzzle, and I couldn't find it either until I saw the solution. Like I said in the OP: I groaned. But the silly pun is precisely what makes this original and funny. The variations on clues you can give are endless! Especially when the players unknowingly use the name of the place when asking for clues, like in this case. Then again, you either get it, or you don't. It's more fun when you do, I agree.

I hope that after all the hoo-ha has died down, and all the 'clues' have been been exhausted, you will please explain to noo-bees like me, what this is all about, in very simple language please.

what this is all about. See what I mean? This, Oz, is about This. Silly, I know, but that's the whole point. A little silliness in all the seriousness of the sophisticated serious puzzles.

Dear JL, Many moons ago, when I was a newbie to the old BBS, a well respected and much missed member gave me hints and tips on how to crack such challenges. It may amuse you to know that having exhausted all other avenues I spent a considerable time searching all geographical references to SV. Then I found this...

I had divided the number of letters in the OP by the number of words and subtracted 2 for the smileys, multiplied that total by the recommended PSI of the tractor tires (tried to zoom but they were too muddy so had to research), then tried to substitute the resulting numbers for letters, but that didn't help. Finally, read the clue, and realized it was just a "good ole fashioned F&G puzzle"! Thank you, JL!!

Well done, all of you who solved this old tricky silly recycled puzzle from the old days. This, of course, is This. As in the village called "This", in France. Pronounced "Teess", probably.
