Here is a clue: The artist, who is famous for his geometry-based drawings and woodcuts, lived in Italy for years. Part of his work is inspired by that country.

Well done all. M. C. Escher first went to Italy in 1922 and lived in Rome from 1923 to 1935. During a tour of the Apennine mountains he made this lithograph of an alley in Scanno. Location of the reproduction: 41.90225°N, 13.88225°E.
